What a day on the Gaff yesterday!  Tons of snow and awesome conditions.  Check this video out by Jamie Elliot for the vids of the day.

Gaff was AWESOME!

What a day on the Gaff.  Tons of powder.  Lots of stucks.  Great day….the pics say it all.  We had Tom Caines along today which is why I am posting so many pics….hard to choose.  Thanks Tom!  The only unfortunate event of the day is I cracked off my front  tooth.  No I wasn’t flying a 20 foot drop……but simply removing my glove with my teeth.  Oh….another sign of age lol.  Off to the dentist in the morning.

Another good dump of snow and good to go!

I was having bad dreams last night hearing rain pound on the window but was pleasantly surprised to find 6 inches of HEAVY snow on the ground this morning.  It rained slightly off and on this morning but turned cold early and started to snow.  Took a group into Hodges today and had the place to ourselves with not a track in sight.  What a day!  I am satisfied now with conditions.  You can go just about anywhere now and there is a good base over the rocks.  What I would like to see is a good freeze for a few days and then another storm.  The freeze has started now come on with another storm!  You can NEVER have too much snow….only makes the winter longer.

Good dump of snow but come on with another!

Excellent going now after that one.  We received maybe 8 inches I figure….was hoping for more.  Another dump on the way tonight of 10 – 20cm; downgraded once again fro 25 – 35 cm.  I have a group going out tomorrow and I hope to try to get up to the play areas around twin ponds (Hodges) depending on the amount of snow that comes tonight and their abilities \ machines.  I really don’t know how much snow is up there yet as I haven’t been there yet this season.  Where’s our 50cm storm?  That’s what we need to get to where we should be right now.  I suspect there is lots os snow on the Gaff now and will be heading there early this week.

Central Conditions

Wednesday, February 11th, 2015

Despite the rumors that are constantly feed by those who have not been into the country and are only going by what’s on the side of the highway and their front lawn….there is a fair bit of snow in Central.  I just checked out Hodges since the last rain and 90% of the trails are very good riding, and there is plenty snow.  Its hard packed but the riding is decent.  Also, it would take only 3 to 4 inches of snow to be excellent.  There was some sections that were rough and icy where water overflowed onto or ran down the trails but overall the trails are good.  Last weekend we were riding the Dawes Pond area and there is even more snow in that area.  Just drive 34 km West of the chalets on the TCH, off load and go.   I was just speaking a friend from Buchan’s just now and he said the going is good up there as well.  I have attached a picture of near the top of Hodges and as you can see most of the snow has been lost but the trail up there is in very good shape.  The open country in Peace Valley (you can see Hodges in the back-round has been flooded and then froze.  The riding is a little rough but not bad.  Once again, 3 or 4 inches of snow and the Valley would be excellent riding.  So, in a nutshell, most of the trails around here are good riding and there is no shortage of ground to cover.  Most of the water from last weeks rain has run off now so a little snow would upgrade conditions from good to excellent.  If you want powder play you have to head further West but if its trail riding you are after, Central is as far as you need to go.  As always, I recommend you install the spring type scratchers in case you need them……Central or Western NL.  But whatever you do, don’t stay home because we have snow… just have to ask the right people. Visit if you fancy Alaska fishing trips and riverside Alaska fishing lodges.

Hodges Update

Sunday, February 8th, 2015

I was in a few km today to check the trails our for a client who was wanting an afternoon riding leaving from the chalets.  We got about an inch of snow up here yesterday which can make all the difference in the world.  The trails are hard where beaten down but off to the sides there is plenty soft snow.  Given the snow we got yesterday cooling was not an issue today.  So there is lots of snow in the Hodges area but hard packed.  They reported the “trails were good”.   It really doesn’t seem like we lot a big lot with the rain but that’s because it was such a solid base already from the type winter we have been having.  I am sure if it had of been powder we would have lost much more.  The only thing is that it is rough for the first 3 km getting in cornfield road from trucks driving in.

Plenty of snow in Dawes Pond Road

Saturday, February 7th, 2015

Just got back from a great day on the sleds.  It wasn’t a powder day….that’s for sure but there is tons of snow.  Lots of areas to be cautious of from flooding but for the most part the going was good.  Some fresh powder or sun would have been nice to soften the snow but off to the sides was plenty soft to avoid overheating.  Dawes Pond Road is 34 KM West of the chalets on your left.  Just before that North Twin road looked good too.  Getting to Hodges from here will be a pain unil we get the ice covered.  It wont take much though.  Where the heck is our Central winter?

Where to go today?

Saturday, February 7th, 2015

Well guys I went into Hodges this morning to check conditions and there is lots of snow but lots of ice.  We went in Ten Mile.  If we had received the couple inches we were supposed to get yesterday evening (and if we never got 53mm as opposed the 20mm – 30mm that was forecasted) it would have been good going.  So that’s out.  However, I was just speaking to someone who went in Dawes Pond Rd this morning and said the going was good with plenty soft snow on the surface… that’s where we are going today.  With that news Id say anywhere that the path was not well beaten should be good, and I can see the trails leaving 10 Mile this morning were good as long as not previously packed down.  Happy trails!

We will survive the storm….I think!

Lotta rain last night….again!  Its starting to slow a little and there is still snow around the chalets so there still should be plenty inside.  What we need now is cold and a little snow which is on the way mid afternoon.  I am 95% sure the trails around Hodges are going to be very good in the morning.  I am a little concerned about some of the brooks flowing over ice so that may require alternate routes….but maybe not.  If you are from GFW and East thinking we are done…..load your sleds in the morning and head up this way.  Should be a great day on the trails.  Of course if you want boondocking keep heading West as they are getting dumped on.

Still good to go despite the rain

Just got out from Monica Camp.  We were stuck in there for two nights with the rain and wind.  Yesterday morning we awoke to –10 and 4 inches of fresh snow but over a period of an hour the temperature rose 15 degrees and it poured for the afternoon afterwhich it dropped back down to –15 in an hour.  A wild mood sing from mother nature for sure.  This morning we came out and were pleasantly surprised at the conditions.  In fact, it was the best ride I had so far this year.  We lost what we got two nights ago but not much more than that.  I was even ditch banging around all the way out with an 8 foot sled behind me lol.  Beautiful day for a ride so I will be heading out for another ride this afternoon for sure!  As for an udate on the Monica cabin the roof is finally done and looks great!
