Meet Our 2012 Raft Guides – Part 3: Darin

“My name is Darin Moore from Windsor Ontario, Canada. For those of you unfamiliar with Windsor, it’s a flat industrial part of Canada with very little to offer in regards to outdoor adventure.

10+ years ago I left home in search of nature’s many pleasures. The search found me in Banff, Alberta where I learned to ski and later become Ski Patrol at Sunshine Ski Resort.  This is also where I learned to raft.

Since then rafting has become my favourite profession (6-7 years) and has even granted me work/play in Costa Rica!darin2

I was lucky enough to win a ‘launch lottery’ for the Colorado River a few years back and was privileged to be able to ask 17 of my best friends to join me on a 25 day rafting expedition of the Grand Canyon (life-changing experience!!).

I can’t wait to add a Newfoundland adventure to that list.

I look forward to meeting you all soon!”

“Hello again,

This will be my third season with Rafting Newfoundland and each year seems to be better than the last. I’m looking forward to meeting all the awesome people who come to enjoy the river. I’m particularly excited about the expansion plans of our operations.

I have a beautiful baby girl at home who’s a little more than 1½ years old. She’s starting to talk more and get into more trouble.

I have an adventurous nature, and enjoy rock climbing, mountain biking, canoe trips, and of course white water rafting.  There’s more to me than a brief article can do justice to, but regardless I’m more than happy to be on the river again this year.”

Still Good Riding!

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Just got back from an awesome ride with Darrell Jenkins of Botwood.  He and his wife threw the snow machines aboard not really expecting to get out….except for the fact that I assured him there was snow.  The two pictures, both taken this morning show how different it is just North of the Chalets.  As the crow flies, only about 10 km away!  With between 4 and 6 inches of heavy powder last night the roads and ice were excellent going.   It turned cold last night so the brooks dropped and created some challenges in the back country.  I think Darrell learned a few things today about skipping water even though he has experience at it.  He now has some new skills which will open new doors for him.  All he needed was for someone else to show him what was possible.  It was just last weekend he and his group turned around and back tracked out because of an “impossible crossing”.  We had an awesome day!  Jay…..keep your finger to yourself LOL!  Unless we get really extreme weather this week I am sure we will still have good riding conditions next weekend and beyond.

Meet Our 2012 Raft Guides – Part 1: Piers

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

11-IMGP0158"Hello all, my name is Piers Evans and I am back for round two! This will be my second year on the Exploits River with Paul at Rafting Newfoundland and I’m very excited to be back on the water.

For those who weren’t in my raft last summer, here’s my story in a couple of sentences. I was born and raised in Southern Ontario, but since the age of 17 I have been travelling and living all over the country and the world.

Two years ago I finished a diploma in outdoor adventure tourism at Algonquin College and Piers 2have spent the last three summers guiding on the water. It seems that I enjoy school, however, so my current situation has me living in St John’s studying at Memorial University in the off-season.

The season of 2012 is shaping up to be a great time to be a raft guide on the Exploits. There are some big plans in the works and some big fun to be had out there, I look forward to seeing you all out on the river this summer!"

You can get to know Piers a bit better and follow his pre-season adventures by visiting his blog: www.followingsol.com
