Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking Weekend

This weekend course is designed for absolute beginners and starts from the ground up. We begin on Friday evening for a workshop on whitewater kayaking theory and safety. This workshop will give you the basic knowledge and theory you will need to use over the weekend.

On Saturday, we start the day teaching kayaking basics such as forward and reverse strokes, draws, sweeps, braces and basic rescue techniques. This will allow you to control your kayak safely and effectively, and give you the knowledge and comfort you will need to safely enjoy the thrill of moving water paddling. From the basics we progress into moving water paddling techniques and you will be able to experience whitewater kayaking on the friendly rapids of the Exploits River.

On Sunday we put your knowledge and experience to the test for a full run down the Exploits from Badger back to our chalets at Aspen Brook running five separate and exciting whitewater elements. You will walk away with an incredible feeling of accomplishment after conquering the Badger Chute, and with a whole new appreciation of the Exploits River and the sport of kayaking.

If you need a place to stay you can bring a tent and camp on our 5 acre property free of charge. If camping is not your preference, we also offer beautiful 4½ star riverfront chalets for rent.

Cost: $199/person (Duration: 15-18hrs over three days; Available most weekends from June 1 - September 30)

Introduction to Flatwater Kayaking & Optional Eskimo Roll Clinic

This course is designed for people with absolutely no kayaking experience. You will learn everything you need to know to navigate a kayak safely over flatwater.

Our Introduction to Flatwater Kayaking course will teach you forward and reverse strokes, draws, sweeps, braces and basic rescue techniques. By the end of the course you should have an understanding of how to properly and safely use a kayak on flatwater.

Once you have completed the introductory lesson, we move on to the optional "Eskimo Roll" clinic. The first and best self-rescue following a capsize in a kayak is the Eskimo roll. This crucial rescue technique, developed by northern aboriginal paddlers, allows you to stay in your kayak once capsized, rapidly right yourself and continue paddling out of a potentially dangerous situation.

Learning how to properly roll is an absolute must for anyone serious about kayking!

All neccessary equipment is provided, but lunch is not included. Please bring your own lunch.

Cost for both courses: $99/person (Duration: 6-8hrs; Available from June 1 - Sept 30)
Single Course Only: $79/person (Duration: 3-4hrs)
